Development Director SAFE Shelter Center for Domestic Violence Services

Status:  Full-Time Exempt Position


The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for developing, implementing, executing, and overseeing a comprehensive Development Strategic plan.

  • Working in conjunction with the Fundraising Committee of board members to carry out a broad-based fundraising plan for targeting individuals, corporations, private enterprises, and foundations. 
  • Prepares an annual plan outlining all fundraising goals and activities with supporting budgets and expected outcomes. This should be done in tandem with the annual budget planning and reported at the same board meeting.
  • Coordinate the SAFE Shelter Annual Giving Event working with the chair, co-chair, and established committees.  Including solicitation of sponsors, live and silent auction items.
  • Seeks out and implements unique special events to supplement existing fundraising programs and organizes committees to execute the events.
  • Assists Executive Director in seeking out, writing, and submitting grants.
  • Maintains an active presence in the community targeting but not limited to social organizations, professional fundraising organizations, and other networking opportunities.
  • Develops a comprehensive educational presentation to present to potential donors.
  • Actively meets with current and new potential donors.
  • Develop program to identify, acquire, cultivate, and recognize donors on an annual basis.
  • Provides leadership in fundraising, goal setting and development.
  • Manage the writing and development of the annual campaign print materials.
  • Work with the Executive Director, the Outreach Coordinator and Communications Committee to ensure ongoing public relations, outreach and community awareness.
  • Establish prospect lists.
  • Research, develop and execute a contact strategy for targeted prospects.
  • Manage cultivation and recognition events.
  • Oversees the data related to prospects and donors is recorded and tracked in electronic and hard copy files.
  • Oversees the monthly newsletter and website upkeep.
  • Works closely with SAFE Shelter public relations firm to insure effective, targeted, and appropriate communications including PSA’s, press and other media releases.  
  • Prepare monthly reports on fundraising and present to executive committee of the Board of Directors and full board.
  • Ensure donor acknowledgement, stewardship, and public recognition, as appropriate.
  • Provides prospecting assistance to Executive Director for Board Development.
  • Work with Finance Committee to develop short- and long-range fundraising goals.
  • Works with board members to engage donors to achieve specific fundraising goals.
  • Assists with planning and supervising all special events to ensure financial success and positive visibility for the organization. This needs to be carried out while considering staff resources and total return on investment.
  • Each event should have a breakout of cost and anticipated return before costs. This may include “soft dollar” reporting of financial value of volunteer time for each event.

Outgoing and enthusiastic personality with knowledge of nonprofit development and campaign fundamentals. Must have the ability to direct and manage the volunteers who will work on the campaign.

  • College degree/degrees preferably in communications and/or public relations
  • Ability to present positive communication and professional image to volunteers, donors, constituents, and staff.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to take photographs
  • Experience with fundraising and capital campaigns.
  • Knowledge of the Savannah community and Chatham County donor base and giving patterns.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Team management/motivational skills.
  • Must be self-directed.
  • Computer skills to include microsoft products and evaluation and recommendation of computer programs pertinent to fundraising and tracking of donor base.
  • Must be knowledgable with Donor Perfect, Greater Giving, Mail Chimp.
  • Must be able to submit two references on successful fundraising campaigns and details on how campaigns were conducted
  • Professional references required.

This is a full time, benefited position. Salary commensurate with experience

The SAFE Shelter Development Director will report directly to the Executive Director.
